DAF tractorheads

DAF Trucks, a Dutch manufacturer part of the PACCAR group, produces its tractor units in Eindhoven (Netherlands) and Leyland (UK). The brand has been Europe's best-selling heavy vehicle manufacturer for several consecutive years.

Main models

  • DAF XF: The flagship for long-distance transport. PACCAR MX-13 12.9-litre engine with 430 to 530 HP. Space Cab or Super Space Cab (the largest in its class at 2,160 mm interior height). Kerb weight from 7,050 kg in 4x2 version.
  • DAF CF: Distribution-oriented and versatile. Available with MX-11 (10.8L, 370-450 HP) or MX-13 engine. More compact than the XF, ideal for applications requiring manoeuvrability.
  • DAF XG / XG+ (from 2021): New generation with redesigned cab. The XG+ offers 2,340 mm interior height, the highest on the market. 20% aerodynamic improvement over the XF.

ZF TraXon transmission

DAF uses the 12-speed ZF TraXon automated gearbox, considered the industry standard. The EcoLife version includes GPS-based predictive shifting that anticipates gear changes based on route profile.

Why buy a used DAF XF and who it suits

The DAF XF is Europe's best-selling long-distance tractor unit, which translates into the most liquid used market: maximum supply, competitive prices and fast resale. Its low fuel consumption (among the best in the segment thanks to aerodynamics and the MX-13) and its Super Space Cab make it the favourite of the international haulier covering 130,000-150,000 km a year. A 4-5 year-old Euro 6 XF 480 with 600,000-800,000 km sells from EUR30,000-42,000. It suits anyone wanting a long-haul with no surprises and a wide service network. PACCAR MX maintenance and inspection points on a used DAF

The PACCAR MX-13 engine is very reliable, but the DPF and SCR need to run: if the vehicle has stood idle for more than 2 weeks, a forced regeneration is advisable, checking the filter has not clogged. Inspect the EAS aftertreatment system for NOx sensor warnings, the condition of the injectors and any EGR coolant leaks. On the XF/XG cab, verify the air conditioning and the cab air-suspension actuators. Request the DAF history (intervals up to 200,000 km with DAF MultiSupport).   • Which DAF model to choose: XF, CF or XG?+
    The XF is the long-haul par excellence: MX-13 engine and Super Space Cab for international work. The CF (MX-11 or MX-13) is more compact and lighter, ideal for distribution and routes with manoeuvring. The XG/XG+ (from 2021) offers the largest cab on the market (2,340 mm) and 20% better aerodynamics, but its used price is still high. For the best value in international haulage, Coatrucks recommends the XF 480.
  • Is the PACCAR MX-13 engine in a used DAF reliable?+
    Yes, the 12.9 L MX-13 is one of the most reliable and frugal engines on the market, with maintenance intervals of up to 200,000 km. The only real care is aftertreatment: if the vehicle has stood idle for over 2 weeks the DPF can clog and needs a forced regeneration. Watch for NOx sensor warnings in the EAS system. Coatrucks regenerates the DPF and verifies the EAS before delivering each XF.
  • Why do used DAF XF come from the Netherlands?+
    DAF is a Dutch manufacturer (Eindhoven) and most of the XF fleet runs in the Netherlands and Belgium, which renew fleets every 4-5 years, generating abundant well-maintained used stock. On flat motorway with efficient driving it drops to 25-26 L/100. The new XG improves aerodynamics by 20%. This frugality is one of the reasons for its very high resale demand.
  • Which DAF cab to choose: Space Cab or Super Space Cab?+
    The Space Cab has a medium roof, enough for national work or a driver not sleeping in daily. The Super Space Cab raises the roof to 2,160 mm interior with a flat floor — the widest in its class, ideal for international work with nights in the cab. The XG+ goes further at 2,340 mm. For long distance and better resale, the Super Space Cab; for distribution the Space Cab is enough and weighs less.
  • Is the DAF's ZF TraXon gearbox reliable and comfortable?+
    Yes. DAF fits the 12-speed ZF TraXon, considered the industry standard for smoothness and reliability. The GPS predictive function anticipates shifts by route profile, optimising fuel. It is the same base used by other premium brands. On high-mileage units, check the clutch and actuator; with an up-to-date service history it is a very durable transmission.
  • Does DAF have a good service network in Spain for parts and repairs?+
    DAF has an official network in Spain with DAF MultiSupport (maintenance and repair contracts) and good availability of PACCAR parts.
