Scania tractorheads

Scania, a Swedish manufacturer part of the TRATON group (Volkswagen), produces its tractor units in Sodertalje (Sweden) and Zwolle (Netherlands). It is renowned for manufacturing the most fuel-efficient engines on the market, repeatedly winning the "Green Truck" award for lowest consumption in independent tests.

Model range

  • Scania R: The most popular series for international transport. Highline or Topliner cab. 13-litre engines (410, 450, 500 HP) and 16-litre V8 (530, 590, 660, 770 HP).
  • Scania S: Flat-floor cab with 2,130 mm interior height. Maximum comfort for long-distance. Same engine options as the R.
  • Scania G: Lower cab for distribution and applications requiring a low centre of gravity. 13-litre engine with 410 to 500 HP.

The Scania V8 engine

Scania's 16.4-litre V8 is a legend in heavy transport. With configurations of 530, 590, 660 and 770 HP, it is the most powerful engine available in a European truck. It uses XPI (Extra High Pressure Injection) at 2,700 bar with dual-stage turbo. The V8 is the choice for timber transport, heavy special and applications requiring maximum power reserve.

Why buy a used Scania and who it suits

Scania has the strongest residual value in the sector and is the choice of hauliers who prioritise fuel economy and reliability over purchase price. A 2019-2021 R 450 with 500,000-700,000 km costs around 45,000-62,000 € and runs at 0.80-0.90 €/km thanks to the most efficient engine on the market and the Opticruise gearbox with predictive driving software. It suits long-distance international fleets, timber transport (V8) and owner-drivers covering 120,000-150,000 km/year who want strong resale at five years. Coatrucks imports Scania directly from Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany with verified SDP3 history.

DC13 maintenance and inspection points on a used Scania

The six-cylinder DC13 is among the most robust engines on the market and exceeds one million kilometres without a rebuild if oil intervals are respected (every 90,000-120,000 km with LDF-4). The most common fault is the front NOx sensor (replacement ~250 €) and, on EGR+SCR versions, the EGR valves may need cleaning around 600,000 km. Before buying, demand an SDP3 diagnosis, check the integrated retarder and inspect the Opticruise clutch above 800,000 km. Coatrucks delivers every Scania with a documented inspection and a 6-month B2B mechanical warranty.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the difference between a used Scania R series and S series?+
The S series has a fully flat-floor cab with 2,130 mm interior height, designed for drivers who live in the truck on long international hauls. The R keeps a small central tunnel but offers the same engines (13-litre or V8) and usually costs 3,000-5,000 € less on the used market. For domestic distribution the R is plenty; for long routes with two drivers the S adds comfort that shows in resale value.
  • Is a second-hand Scania V8 worth it over a 13-litre?+
The 16.4-litre V8 (530-770 HP) only pays off for timber transport, mega-trucks, lowbed or heavy special work where torque reserve is critical. It burns 8-12% more than the DC13 and both purchase and resale prices are higher. For general curtainside or reefer work, an R 450 or R 500 with the 13-litre engine offers better TCO. At Coatrucks we advise based on your real cargo type before you commit.
  • Is the Scania DC13 engine reliable at high mileage?+
The DC13 is among the most robust six-cylinders in the sector and exceeds one million kilometres without a rebuild if LDF oil changes are kept every 90,000-120,000 km. The most common weak point is the front NOx sensor (~250 €) and, on EGR versions, occasional valve cleaning around 600,000 km. A unit with Scania history and a clean SDP3 diagnosis is a very safe buy above 700,000 km.
  • Why is the Scania retarder considered the best in the sector?+
Scania's integrated hydraulic retarder delivers up to 4,700 Nm of braking and is managed together with Opticruise to brake on gradients without touching the service brakes, extending pad and disc life. On long mountain descents it reduces wear and increases safety versus an axle retarder. Almost every long-distance Scania tractor unit we sell at Coatrucks has it as standard.
  • What fuel consumption does a used Scania R 450 achieve on the road?+
An R 450 with Opticruise and predictive driving runs at around 27-29 litres/100 km fully loaded on the motorway, among the most efficient on the market (hence its Green Truck awards). With a driver trained in eco-driving it can drop below 27 litres. This is one reason Scania holds its value better: fuel savings offset the purchase premium over the vehicle's life.
  • What is the Scania service network like in Spain?+
Scania Spain has official workshops in every province with maintenance and repair contracts, plus 24h Scania Assistance across Europe. Parts availability for R, S and G series is excellent and workshop times are competitive. This makes it easy to maintain a Scania imported from Sweden or the Netherlands without depending on the country of origin.
  • Can I import a Scania from Sweden or the Netherlands with Coatrucks?+
Yes. We import Scania directly from Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany, where there is large stock of very well-kept units. We handle transport, reduced homologation in Spain (technical sheet with COC, ~148 € and 24-48 h) and registration fees (700-1,000 €). As an intra-EU transaction, VAT is 0% via VIES if your company is on the ROI register. Typical timeline: 7-15 days from purchase to registered.
