Volvo tractorheads

Volvo Trucks, headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, is a global leader in heavy vehicle road safety. The FH series (Futur Hauler), originally launched in 1993, revolutionised the tractor cab concept and remains one of Europe's best sellers.

Volvo FH: versions and engines

  • Volvo FH: D13 12.8-litre engine with 420, 460, 500 and 540 HP. Globetrotter or Globetrotter XL cab (the most spacious with flat floor and 2,140 mm interior height).
  • Volvo FH16: D16 16.1-litre engine with 550, 650 and 750 HP. For heavy and special transport. Volvo's V8 is the most powerful engine available in a series-production European truck.
  • Volvo FH Electric: 100% electric version with up to 300 km range. Available with equivalent outputs of 490 and 653 HP.

I-Shift transmission

Volvo's I-Shift was the sector's pioneering automated transmission (introduced in 2001). It offers 12 forward gears with situation-specific modes: Economy, Performance, Off-road and slow manoeuvring. The I-Shift Dual Clutch version eliminates torque interruptions during shifts, similar to an automotive DSG gearbox.

Why buy a used Volvo FH and who it suits

The Volvo FH is the benchmark in active safety and driving comfort: the haulier who values the driving position, Volvo Dynamic Steering and the standard VEB+ retarder chooses it above all. It shares mechanicals with the Renault T but with higher equipment and better resale. An FH 460/500 (D13) of 4-5 years with 600,000-750,000 km sells from EUR35,000-46,000. It suits intensive international work, mountain transport (thanks to the VEB+) and fleets prioritising driver retention. Coatrucks carries FH 4x2 and 6x2 stock inspected with Volvo Tech Tool diagnostics.

D13 maintenance and inspection points on a used Volvo FH

The 12.8 L D13 is one of the most reliable engines on the market, but check: the EGR valve (can clog in urban or stop-start use), the SCR system and AdBlue injectors, and the I-Shift clutch at high mileage. On the I-Shift Dual Clutch, verify both clutches engage without jerks. Also check VDS steering wear and Globetrotter cab play. Request the Volvo history (intervals up to 150,000 km with Volvo Gold Contract). Coatrucks verifies the EGR/SCR and cleans the DPF before every delivery.

Frequently asked questions

  • Which Volvo engine to choose: FH 460, FH 500 or FH16?+
The FH 460 (D13) is efficient for standard national and international work at 40 t. The FH 500 (D13) is the sweet spot for international work with gradients and the strongest on resale. The FH16 (D16, 550-750 HP) only pays off for heavy transport, 60 t road trains or car carriers. For general international use, Coatrucks recommends the FH 460 or 500 depending on your route terrain.
  • Is the used Volvo FH reliable? Any weak points?+
Yes, the FH with the D13 engine is among the most reliable on the market. Watch points: the EGR valve (can clog in urban use), the SCR/AdBlue system and injectors, and the I-Shift clutch at high mileage. The VDS steering and Globetrotter cab are very durable. With an up-to-date Volvo history, an FH exceeds 1.5 million km. Coatrucks verifies the EGR/SCR and clutch before selling.
  • What real advantage does Volvo's I-Shift have over other gearboxes?+
The I-Shift (2001) was the pioneering automated gearbox and remains a benchmark for smoothness and modes (Economy, Performance, Off-road, manoeuvring). The I-Shift Dual Clutch versión eliminates torque interruptions during shifts, like a car DSG, ideal for the mountains. On used units, check the clutch at high mileage; with maintenance it is very durable and improves the FH's resale value.
  • What is the Volvo FH's VEB+ retarder for?+
The VEB+ (Volvo Engine Brake) is the FH's standard engine brake, one of the most powerful on the market: it uses engine compression to brake without wearing the service brakes, up to 80-90% on descents. It is key for mountain transport or high tonnage. Many FH combine it with an optional hydraulic retarder. This standard equipment is one reason for the FH's strong demand on demanding routes.
  • What does a Volvo FH 500 consume on long haul?+
A Euro 6 FH 500 (D13) at 40 t runs around 28-30 L/100 km on mixed European routes, similar to the Renault T since they share the engine. With I-See (GPS predictive driving) and Economy mode it drops to 27 L/100 on flat motorway; in the mountains it rises to 32-34 L/100. AdBlue adds about 6%. The VDS steering and FH aerodynamics help keep consumption competitive.
  • Should I buy an FH 6x2 with lift axle or a 4x2?+
The 4x2 is standard for 40 t in Spain: the lightest and most efficient. The FH 6x2 with lift axle (tag-axle) allows 44-48 t in Germany, the Netherlands and Northern Europe, distributes brake weight better and lowers empty consumption (axle up). Worth it if you run 40t+ tonnage up north or oversized transport. For standard Spanish routes, the 4x2. Coatrucks stocks both configurations.
  • Does a used Volvo FH hold value well?+
Yes, the FH holds solid value through brand, safety and international demand, especially the FH 500 Globetrotter XL with I-Shift and VEB+. Its depreciation is comparable to Mercedes/Scania and better than Renault/Iveco. The safety equipment and comfort make it highly sought after in fleets. Buying a Euro 6 FH with Volvo Gold Contract history is a safe 3-5 year long-haul investment.
