ADR tractorheads for dangerous goods

ADR (Accord europeen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route) is the European agreement governing the transport of dangerous goods by road. A tractorhead with ADR approval incorporates specific modifications to its electrical installation, exhaust system, fire protection and safety equipment that distinguish it from a conventional tractor unit.

ADR dangerous goods classes

The ADR classifies dangerous goods into 9 main classes, each with specific vehicle requirements:

  • Class 1: Explosives (ammunition, pyrotechnics, detonators). Requires EX/II or EX/III type vehicle with spark and heating protection.
  • Class 2: Gases (compressed, liquefied, refrigerated). Includes LPG, industrial oxygen, chlorine and ammonia.
  • Class 3: Flammable liquids (fuels, solvents, paints, alcohols). The most transported class in Europe.
  • Class 4: Flammable solids, substances with spontaneous combustión risk and substances emitting flammable gases on contact with water.
  • Class 5: Oxidising substances and organic peroxides.
  • Class 6: Toxic and infectious substances (chemicals, biological samples).
  • Class 7: Radioactive material (medical isotopes, nuclear waste).
  • Class 8: Corrosive substances (acids, alkalis, batteries).
  • Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous goods (lithium batteries, asbestos, environmentally hazardous substances).

Mandatory ADR equipment on tractorheads

An ADR-approved tractorhead must incorporate the following elements per European standards:

  • Protected electrical installation: All wiring behind the cab must be protected against mechanical damage with rigid conduits or flexible hoses. Semi-trailer connectors must be ADR type with IP54 or higher protection.
  • Battery master switch: Positive pole disconnector accessible from outside the cab and from inside simultaneously. Must cut all current except the tachograph and ABS/EBS devices.
  • Protected exhaust system: The exhaust pipe must terminate before the rear axle and direct away from the chassis, away from the fuel tank. The catalytic converter and DPF filter must have thermal protection.
  • ADR safety equipment: Two fire extinguishers (2 kg + 6 kg minimum), wheel chock, two self-standing warning signs, reflective vest, non-metallic torch, protective gloves and eye protection.
  • Signage: Reflective orange panels (400x300 mm) at front and rear of vehicle. Specific hazard placards according to the class of goods carried.

ADR vehicle approval types for tractorheads

ADR tractorheads are classified by vehicle type according to the classes they can carry:

  • FL: For flammable liquids (class 3) with flash point below 60°C, flammable gases (class 2) and organic peroxides.
  • OX: For class 5.1 oxidising substances in tanks.
  • AT: For dangerous goods in tanks other than FL and OX.
  • EX/II and EX/III: For class 1 explosives. Type EX/III is the most restrictive, requiring a cab separated from the load, anti-spark materials and total absence of accessible hot surfaces.
