ADR tractorheads for dangerous goods

ADR (Accord europeen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route) is the European agreement governing the transport of dangerous goods by road. A tractorhead with ADR approval incorporates specific modifications to its electrical installation, exhaust system, fire protection and safety equipment that distinguish it from a conventional tractor unit.

ADR dangerous goods classes

The ADR classifies dangerous goods into 9 main classes, each with specific vehicle requirements:

  • Class 1: Explosives (ammunition, pyrotechnics, detonators). Requires EX/II or EX/III type vehicle with spark and heating protection.
  • Class 2: Gases (compressed, liquefied, refrigerated). Includes LPG, industrial oxygen, chlorine and ammonia.
  • Class 3: Flammable liquids (fuels, solvents, paints, alcohols). The most transported class in Europe.
  • Class 4: Flammable solids, substances with spontaneous combustion risk and substances emitting flammable gases on contact with water.
  • Class 5: Oxidising substances and organic peroxides.
  • Class 6: Toxic and infectious substances (chemicals, biological samples).
  • Class 7: Radioactive material (medical isotopes, nuclear waste).
  • Class 8: Corrosive substances (acids, alkalis, batteries).
  • Class 9: Miscellaneous dangerous goods (lithium batteries, asbestos, environmentally hazardous substances).

Mandatory ADR equipment on tractorheads

An ADR-approved tractorhead must incorporate the following elements per European standards:

  • Protected electrical installation: All wiring behind the cab must be protected against mechanical damage with rigid conduits or flexible hoses. Semi-trailer connectors must be ADR type with IP54 or higher protection.
  • Battery master switch: Positive pole disconnector accessible from outside the cab and from inside simultaneously. Must cut all current except the tachograph and ABS/EBS devices.
  • Protected exhaust system: The exhaust pipe must terminate before the rear axle and direct away from the chassis, away from the fuel tank. The catalytic converter and DPF filter must have thermal protection.
  • ADR safety equipment: Two fire extinguishers (2 kg + 6 kg minimum), wheel chock, two self-standing warning signs, reflective vest, non-metallic torch, protective gloves and eye protection.
  • Signage: Reflective orange panels (400x300 mm) at front and rear of vehicle. Specific hazard placards according to the class of goods carried.

ADR vehicle approval types for tractorheads

ADR tractorheads are classified by vehicle type according to the classes they can carry:

  • FL: For flammable liquids (class 3) with flash point below 60°C, flammable gases (class 2) and organic peroxides.
  • OX: For class 5.1 oxidising substances in tanks.
  • AT: For dangerous goods in tanks other than FL and OX.
  • EX/II and EX/III: For class 1 explosives. Type EX/III is the most restrictive, requiring a cab separated from the load, anti-spark materials and total absence of accessible hot surfaces.

What to check when buying a used ADR tractor unit

Before buying a second-hand ADR tractor unit, check the ADR approval certificate is valid: it expires every year and requires a specific annual inspection at an authorised test centre. Verify that the protected electrical installation, master switch and exhaust system have not been altered, and that the type (FL, AT, EX/II, EX/III) matches the goods you will carry. Renewing or recovering a lapsed ADR approval costs time and money. At Coatrucks we deliver every ADR tractor unit with a valid conformity certificate and a documented inspection.

How much it costs to maintain and renew ADR approval

The annual ADR inspection at a test centre is around 100-160 € depending on the region, plus extinguisher inspection and recharge (40-80 €) and replacing the ADR kit if material is missing. The annual cost of keeping an ADR tractor unit up to date is modest against the value of dangerous goods transport, which is billed at higher rates. If you import an ADR tractor unit from another EU country, the European approval is recognised in Spain; at Coatrucks we handle the validation and the reduced technical sheet (~148 €, 24-48 h with COC).

Frequently asked questions

  • What is an ADR tractor unit and how does it differ from a normal one?+
An ADR tractor unit is approved to haul tanks or semi-trailers with dangerous goods under the European ADR agreement. Compared with a conventional one, it has a protected electrical installation, accessible master switch, relocated exhaust system, thermal protection and mandatory safety equipment. The difference is not in the engine but in safety and certification. At Coatrucks we stock ADR tractor units from Volvo, Scania, DAF, Mercedes, MAN, Renault and Iveco with a valid conformity certificate.
  • Do I need an ADR licence to drive an ADR tractor unit?+
Yes. The driver must hold a valid ADR training certificate (basic course plus tank or explosives specialisations depending on the load). The ADR vehicle and the ADR licence are separate requirements but both mandatory. Buying an ADR tractor unit does not exempt the driver from training. At Coatrucks we guide you on the vehicle requirements; driver training is arranged at approved centres.
  • Which ADR approval type do I need: FL, AT or EX?+
It depends on the goods. FL is for class 3 flammable liquids (fuels, solvents) and flammable gases; AT for dangerous goods in tanks other than FL or OX; EX/II and EX/III for class 1 explosives, with EX/III the most restrictive. Most tank transport uses FL or AT. Before buying, make sure the type matches your activity; at Coatrucks we advise based on the class you carry.
  • How often must the tractor unit's ADR approval be renewed?+
The vehicle's ADR approval expires annually and requires a specific inspection at an authorised test centre, costing roughly 100-160 € depending on the region. Add extinguisher inspection and replacing the ADR kit if material is missing. It is modest maintenance against the higher rates of dangerous goods transport. At Coatrucks we deliver every ADR tractor unit with a valid certificate.
  • Can I remove the ADR approval if I stop carrying dangerous goods?+
Yes. An ADR tractor unit can be used perfectly for conventional transport; you simply do not renew the ADR certificate and drive it like a normal unit. The ADR equipment (master switch, protected exhaust) does not hinder general use. In fact, buying an ADR and using it as conventional can be a good option if you foresee entering dangerous goods in future. At Coatrucks we advise on the flexibility of each unit.
  • Is a used ADR tractor unit more expensive?+
It usually costs 3-8% more than an equivalent without ADR due to the extra equipment and certification, but it gives access to dangerous goods freight paid at higher rates, so the investment pays off quickly if you work in that sector. It also resells well because there is constant demand. At Coatrucks we compare the premium against the expected return for your operation.
  • Can I import an ADR tractor unit from Europe with Coatrucks?+
Yes. We import ADR tractor units from Germany, the Netherlands, France and other EU countries, where European ADR approval is valid and recognised in Spain. We handle transport, validation of the approval, the reduced technical sheet (~148 € and 24-48 h with COC) and registration fees (700-1,000 €). As an intra-EU transaction, VAT is 0% via VIES if your company is on the ROI register. Typical timeline: 7-15 days.
