Tractor Units with Mega / Lowdeck

Used Mega and Lowdeck tractorheads for sale
Used Mega and Lowdeck tractorheads for sale
Buy second-hand Mega tractor units with lowered fifth wheel to maximise semi-trailer cargo volume. The Mega (or Lowdeck) configuration lowers the fifth wheel height to 850-920 mm, allowing tautliner semi-trailers with 3,000 mm interior height instead of the standard 2,700 mm. This means 11% more cargo volume, critical for transporting bulky, lightweight goods. We stock Mega 4x2 tractorheads from all brands: Renault T Lowdeck, DAF XF Super Space Cab Low, Volvo FH Lowdeck, Scania R Lowdeck, MAN TGX Low, Mercedes Actros Lowdeck and Iveco S-Way Low. All Euro 6 and inspected.

Mega / Lowdeck tractorheads

A Mega tractorhead (also called Lowdeck, Low Rider or Low Deck) is a tractor unit with the fifth wheel mounted lower than standard. While a conventional tractorhead positions the fifth wheel at 1,050-1,150 mm from the ground, a Mega places it at 850-920 mm. This 200 mm difference allows the semi-trailer to be taller without exceeding the maximum 4,000 mm total height permitted in Europe.

Why choose a Mega tractorhead

Volume transport (not weight) represents a significant portion of European freight traffic. Products such as textiles, automotive components, appliances, flat-pack furniture, parcels and mail take up a lot of space but weigh little. With a Mega semi-trailer at 3,000 mm interior height (versus the standard 2,700 mm), you gain 11% more usable volume, which can mean an extra row of pallets or several additional layers of boxes. For curtainsider and parcel transport operators, the Mega tractorhead is the most profitable configuration.

Technical requirements for Mega

The reduction in fifth wheel height is achieved through several modifications:

  • Low-profile tyres: 295/55 R22.5 or 295/60 R22.5 tyres are used instead of standard 315/80 R22.5. This reduces axle height by 40-60 mm.
  • Lowered fifth wheel: A low-profile fifth wheel (Jost JSK 36CZ or JOST JSK 37CZ Mega) is fitted with a lower plate height than standard.
  • Lowered air suspension: The chassis is equipped with shorter-travel air bellows allowing a lower ride height.
  • Chassis without reinforcement beam: On some models, the rear chassis beam is removed or lowered to gain additional millimetres.

Mega tractorheads by brand

All European manufacturers offer Mega versions of their main tractorheads:

  • Renault T Lowdeck: Factory Mega version with fifth wheel at 880 mm. Renault is one of the most experienced manufacturers in Mega, with a dedicated line since the Premium Route era.
  • DAF XF Low Deck: Fifth wheel at 890 mm. Available with Super Space Cab, making it one of the few Mega tractorheads with a large-volume cab.
  • Volvo FH Lowdeck: Fifth wheel at 900 mm. Combinable with Globetrotter cab. The I-Shift automatically adapts to the lower ride profile.
  • Scania R Lowdeck: Fifth wheel at 895 mm. Available with all R series engines including the V8.
  • MAN TGX Low: Fifth wheel at 890 mm. The new TGX offers the Low version with full GX cab.
  • Mercedes Actros Lowdeck: Fifth wheel at 895 mm. Compatible with MirrorCam and all Actros MP5 driver assistance systems.
  • Iveco S-Way Low: Fifth wheel at 900 mm. Also available in NP (LNG) version for sustainable Mega transport.

Complete Mega combination

A typical Mega combination consists of a Lowdeck tractorhead (fifth wheel at 850-920 mm) plus a 3-axle Mega semi-trailer with 3,000 mm interior height (versus 2,700 mm standard). The total height of the combination does not exceed the regulatory 4,000 mm. Leading Mega semi-trailer manufacturers include Schmitz Cargobull (S.CS Mega), Krone (Mega Liner) and Kogel (Cargo Mega). The additional cost of a Mega tractorhead versus standard is EUR2,000-4,000, an investment that pays for itself quickly in high-volume operations.

What to check when buying a used Mega tractor unit

When buying a second-hand Mega Lowdeck, check the condition of the low-profile tyres (295/55 or 295/60 R22.5): they are specific and somewhat more expensive, and their wear affects ride height. Verify the lowered air suspension works without leaks and that the low-profile Jost fifth wheel is in good condition, as replacing a Mega fifth wheel costs 800-1,500 €. Measure the actual fifth wheel height to ensure it is compatible with your 3,000 mm Mega semi-trailer. At Coatrucks we deliver every Mega tractor unit with a documented inspection and verified fifth wheel height.

Mega or standard tractor unit: when it pays off

The Mega pays off when your load fills the volume before the weight: parcels, textiles, flat-pack furniture, appliances or automotive components. The extra 11% of volume can mean another row of pallets or several layers of boxes, translating into fewer trips and more billing. If you carry heavy loads that hit 40 tonnes (steel, coils, liquids), a standard tractor unit is better because the Mega sacrifices some ground clearance and robustness. At Coatrucks we help you decide based on your cargo type and routes.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a Mega or Lowdeck tractor unit and what is it for?+
A Mega (or Lowdeck) tractor unit has the fifth wheel mounted at 850-920 mm instead of the standard 1,050-1,150 mm. Those 200 mm lower allow coupling a semi-trailer with 3,000 mm interior height without exceeding the regulatory 4,000 mm total in Europe, gaining 11% cargo volume. It is for volume transport: parcels, textiles, furniture. At Coatrucks we stock Mega tractor units from Renault, DAF, Volvo, Scania, MAN, Mercedes and Iveco.
  • How much extra cargo volume do I gain with a Mega tractor unit?+
With a complete Mega combination (Lowdeck tractor unit plus a 3,000 mm interior-height semi-trailer) you gain around 11% volume versus a standard 2,700 mm set, usually equivalent to an extra row of pallets or several additional layers of boxes. In bulky, lightweight transport, that extra volume reduces the number of trips and increases billing per journey. It is the most profitable configuration for curtainsider and parcel work.
  • Does a used Mega tractor unit work with any semi-trailer?+
A Mega couples any standard semi-trailer, but you only get the volume advantage with a tall-interior Mega semi-trailer (3,000 mm). Used with a normal semi-trailer you gain no volume, though it still works normally. It is wise to measure the fifth wheel height to ensure compatibility. At Coatrucks we verify the fifth wheel height of every Mega tractor unit and advise you on the right semi-trailer.
  • What downsides does a Mega tractor unit have versus a standard one?+
The Mega sacrifices some ground clearance due to the low-profile tyres and lowered suspension, making it less suited to access with steep humps or poor tracks. Also, the 295/55 or 295/60 R22.5 tyres are specific and somewhat more expensive. For heavy loads that hit 40 tonnes, a standard is preferable. For volume transport, the advantages clearly outweigh the downsides. At Coatrucks we guide you based on your operation.
  • What tyres does a Mega tractor unit use and are they more expensive?+
Mega tractor units run low-profile 295/55 R22.5 or 295/60 R22.5 tyres instead of the standard 315/80 R22.5, to lower axle height by 40-60 mm. They are somewhat more expensive and specific, so it is wise to check their condition when buying second-hand, as they determine ride height. At Coatrucks we inspect the tyres of every Mega and record it in the vehicle's documented inspection.
  • How much more does a Mega tractor unit cost than a standard one?+
The premium of a Mega tractor unit over an equivalent standard is around 2,000-4,000 €, for the lowered fifth wheel, suspension and specific tyres. In high-volume operations that investment pays off quickly thanks to the extra 11% of cargo per trip. Also, a well-kept Mega resells well because there is constant demand in parcel and curtainsider transport. At Coatrucks we compare the premium against the expected return for you.
  • Can I import a Mega tractor unit from Europe with Coatrucks?+
Yes. We import Mega Lowdeck tractor units from Germany, the Netherlands, France and other EU markets, where they are common in volume-transport fleets. We handle transport, reduced homologation in Spain (technical sheet with COC, ~148 € and 24-48 h) and registration fees (700-1,000 €). As an intra-EU transaction, VAT is 0% via VIES if your company is on the ROI register. Typical timeline: 7-15 days from purchase to registered.
