4x4 all-wheel drive tractorheads
The 4x4 configuration in a tractorhead means that both axles (front and rear) are driven, providing all-wheel drive. Unlike the standard 4x2 configuration designed for highway use, the 4x4 tractorhead is built to operate on unpaved terrain, steep gradients, mud, snow and conditions where traction is critical.
Difference between 4x4, 4x2 and 6x4
The nomenclature indicates the total number of wheels and the driven wheels:
- 4x2: Two axles, only the rear is driven. The standard for highway use: lowest weight, lowest consumption, maximum legal GVW. Represents 85% of the tractorhead market.
- 4x4: Two axles, both driven. All-wheel drive for difficult terrain. Weight penalty of 500-800 kg versus 4x2 and 8-12% higher consumption. Used in construction, forestry, military and transport in remote areas.
- 6x4: Three axles, both rear axles driven. For heavy loads on mixed terrain (road + site). GVW up to 33 tonnes. More stable than 4x4 under load, but less agile off-road.
- 6x6: Three axles, all driven. Maximum traction for military and extreme construction applications. Uncommon in civilian tractorheads.
4x4 models by brand
Not all manufacturers offer 4x4 tractorheads in their range. The main available models are:
- Mercedes Arocs 2045 4x4: OM 471 engine at 450 HP. Compact ClassicSpace cab. Reinforced chassis with standard underbody protection. Turbo Retarder Clutch (TRC) for smooth hill starts.
- Volvo FMX 4x4: D13 engine at 460 HP. The FMX range is specifically designed for construction with steel bumper, raised wheel arches and 25-degree approach angle. Engageable drive with rear differential lock.
- Scania G/R 4x4: 13-litre engines (410-500 HP). Scania offers 4x4 configurations in both the G (low cab) and R series. Optional transfer box and differential locks.
- MAN TGS 18.510 4x4: D26 engine at 510 HP. The TGS is MAN's construction line with reinforced chassis and Hydrodrive options (hydraulic front-wheel drive without mechanical driven axle).
- Renault K 4x4: DTI 13 engine at 460 HP. The K series is Renault Trucks' construction range with Optitrack (hydraulic front-wheel drive similar to MAN's Hydrodrive).
- Iveco Trakker 4x4: Cursor 13 engine at 500 HP. High-resistance chassis with 10 mm side rails. The Trakker is Iveco's off-road model, successor to the legendary EuroTrakker.
4x4 tractorhead applications
4x4 tractorheads are used in sectors where access via conventional roads is not possible:
- Construction: Access to building sites in undeveloped areas, quarries and gravel pits with irregular, muddy terrain.
- Forestry: Timber transport from forest operations on dirt tracks with steep gradients.
- Wind farms: Transport of blades and turbine components to mountainous locations with difficult access.
- Military and emergency: Vehicles for armed forces and civil protection needing to operate on any terrain.
- Mining: Access to open-pit mining operations with compacted earth ramps.
