Used trailers
A trailer is an unpowered vehicle hitched to a truck via a drawbar and eye coupling, unlike a semi-trailer which couples via a fifth wheel. Trailers enable road trains (truck + trailer) of up to 25.25 metres total length in EMS (European Modular System) or ecocombi configurations.
Trailer advantages
A road train can transport up to 50% more cargo than a standard tractor + semi-trailer combination. In countries such as Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands and Germany, configurations of up to 60 tonnes and 25.25 m are commonplace. In Spain, regulations allow road trains up to 18.75 m with rigid truck + trailer.
Trailer types
- Tipper: For construction. Rear or three-way tipping. Aluminium or Hardox steel.
- Flatbed: For general cargo and construction materials. Fixed or extendable.
- Curtainsider: Forklift side loading. Standard and Mega versions.
- Refrigerated: Perishable goods with cooling unit. ATP certification.
- Tanker: For food, chemical or fuel liquids.
- Car transporter: Car and van transport. Adjustable platforms.
- Dolly: Auxiliary axle converting a semi-trailer into a trailer for road train configurations.
Road train regulations
In Spain, maximum length for a rigid truck + trailer is 18.75 m with GVW up to 40 tonnes. Megatrailer configurations (25.25 m) require special authorisation and are limited to specific DGT-approved routes. In northern Europe (Sweden, Finland), trains of up to 60 tonnes and 25.25 m operate as standard.
