Used trailers for sale

Used trailers for sale
Used trailers for sale
Buy used trailers in all configurations: tippers, flatbeds, curtainsiders, refrigerated, tankers and car transporters. For road trains (truck + trailer) that maximise payload. Air and leaf spring suspensión. All European brands, inspected with warranty. Over 35 years as an industrial vehicle dealer in Lleida, Spain. Shipping across Spain and Europe.

Used trailers

A trailer is an unpowered vehicle hitched to a truck via a drawbar and eye coupling, unlike a semi-trailer which couples via a fifth wheel. Trailers enable road trains (truck + trailer) of up to 25.25 metres total length in EMS (European Modular System) or ecocombi configurations.

Trailer advantages

A road train can transport up to 50% more cargo than a standard tractor + semi-trailer combination. In countries such as Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands and Germany, configurations of up to 60 tonnes and 25.25 m are commonplace. In Spain, regulations allow road trains up to 18.75 m with rigid truck + trailer.

Trailer types

  • Tipper: For construction. Rear or three-way tipping. Aluminium or Hardox steel.
  • Flatbed: For general cargo and construction materials. Fixed or extendable.
  • Curtainsider: Forklift side loading. Standard and Mega versions.
  • Refrigerated: Perishable goods with cooling unit. ATP certification.
  • Tanker: For food, chemical or fuel liquids.
  • Car transporter: Car and van transport. Adjustable platforms.
  • Dolly: Auxiliary axle converting a semi-trailer into a trailer for road train configurations.

Road train regulations

In Spain, maximum length for a rigid truck + trailer is 18.75 m with GVW up to 40 tonnes. Megatrailer configurations (25.25 m) require special authorisation and are limited to specific DGT-approved routes. In northern Europe (Sweden, Finland), trains of up to 60 tonnes and 25.25 m operate as standard.

Frequently asked questions

  • How much does a used trailer cost?+
A basic 2-axle flatbed or curtainsider trailer from 2010-2014 starts at €5,000-9,000 + VAT. 2-3 axle tipper trailers from 2016-2019: €8,000-15,000. Refrigerated 3-axle with Carrier unit in good condition: €14,000-25,000. Food or ADR tankers by product: €12,000-30,000. Extendable flatbeds: €9,000-18,000. Coatrucks publishes ex-VAT prices with full specs and real photos.
  • Tipper, flatbed, curtainsider, refrigerated, tanker: which type to choose?+
Tipper for aggregates, debris, grain and waste (hydraulic discharge). Flatbed for strap-secured loads (beams, precast, machinery). Curtainsider/tautliner for palletised freight with side opening (general logistics). Refrigerated Carrier/Thermo King for cold chain. ADR tanker for chemicals/food liquids. Container chassis for ISO 20'/40' traffic. Choice defines your activity.
  • 2-axle vs 3-axle trailer: which to choose?+
2 axles: GVW 18-24t. Lighter, more manoeuvrable, lower fuel and kerb. Ideal for regional distribution, palletised cargo or medium loads. 3 axles: GVW 24-32t. Greater payload, better weight distribution, more stability at speed. For heavy aggregates, grain and long road trains. Choice depends on usual tonnage and cargo type.
  • Truck + trailer GVW: 18, 24 or 44 tonnes?+
In Spain, a truck + trailer road train (GVW 44t) has 18.75m max length and allows much more payload than a single rigid (44t vs 32t in 4-axle). Lighter setups: 12t truck + 24t trailer = 36t total. For Northern Europe (Sweden, Finland) there are 60t/25.25m road trains. In Spain, megatrailer configurations require special permits.
  • How do you match the truck to the trailer?+
You need a truck with trailer-towing homologation (most European rigids have it). Hitch can be type D (homologated CEPA ball) for light trailers or hook type (Rockinger, Ringfeder) for heavy trailers. Electrical hitch installation must have 7 or 13 pins as needed. The trailer requires lights, air brakes, ABS and compatible electrical kit.
  • How often does a trailer need MOT?+
In Spain, trailer MOT is annual from the first year. They inspect chassis, axles, brakes (roller bench), suspension, lights, tyres, hydraulic system (tippers), cooling unit (refrigerated) and connections with the tractor truck. For tippers, MOT checks the hydraulic system and lateral stability. MOT is mandatory to circulate.
  • Carrier vs Thermo King refrigeration: which is better?+
Carrier (Vector, Supra) European leader with good reliability, energy efficiency and service. Thermo King (V-Series, T-Series) world reference, robust and durable. Both with eutectic systems, multi-temperature and telematics. Choice tends to be regional: Carrier more popular in Southern Europe, Thermo King in Northern. Similar maintenance (annual service). The cooling unit adds €5,000-12,000 to trailer price.
  • BPW vs SAF axle and suspension systems?+
BPW (Germany) European leader in axles with good durability reputation and extensive service in Spain (bearings, disc brakes, air suspension). SAF-Holland (Germany) stands out in lighter suspensions and Intradisc disc brakes. Both with ABS/EBS. Parts available in any workshop. Choice doesn't significantly affect resale value, but does affect local maintenance ease.
  • Kerb weight and payload of a trailer?+
2-axle flatbed: kerb 3,500 kg, payload 14.5t (with 18t GVW). 3-axle flatbed: kerb 4,500 kg, payload 19.5t (24t GVW). 2-axle aluminium tipper: kerb 3,800 kg, payload 14.2t. 3-axle Hardox tipper: kerb 5,500 kg, payload 18.5t. 3-axle refrigerated with unit: kerb 5,500 kg, payload 18.5t. Tanker: depends on material (aluminium/stainless) and compartments.
  • Usual maintenance and care?+
Air suspension: check bellows, valves and compressor (annual maintenance). Disc/drum brakes: pads by usage (~80,000-150,000 km), discs every 4-6 years. BPW/SAF axles: bearings every 200,000 km, oil change every 500,000 km. Tipper hydraulic systems: annual oil change + filters. Refrigerated: quarterly condenser cleaning, refrigerant gas every 2-3 years. Annual MOT. Coatrucks delivers inspected.
  • Do you deliver trailers anywhere in Spain and Europe?+
Yes. Delivery across Spain from Lleida with dedicated tractor or convoy: Madrid (4h), Valencia (3h), Seville (8h), Barcelona (2h), Bilbao (5h), Málaga (9h), A Coruña (10h). For Europe: France 24-48h, Portugal 24h, Italy 2-3 days, Germany 3-4 days. Insured door-to-door transport. Request exact quote with any inquiry.
  • Is there warranty and financing on used trailers?+

Coatrucks offers full pre-delivery inspection as standard and optional extended mechanical warranty (including hydraulic systems on tippers and cooling unit on refrigerated). Financing: BBVA Autorenting, Santander Consumer, BNP Paribas Leasing — 24-60 months, 10-30% deposit. Also operating leasing and renting. Request simulation.
