A semi-trailer is an unpowered vehicle coupled to a tractor unit via the fifth wheel (king pin). The tractor + semi-trailer combination can reach up to 40 tonnes GVW in the European Union. Standard semi-trailers have 3 axles and a maximum length of 13.62 metres.

Semi-trailer types
- Curtainsider / Tautliner: The most versatile. Side curtains open fully for forklift loading. Standard (2,700 mm) and Mega (3,000 mm interior height) versions. XL certification for load securing without additional strapping.
- Flatbed: No side walls, for loads secured with straps. Extendable models for long loads. Some with ISO twist-locks for containers.
- Refrigerated: Insulated box with Carrier or Thermoking cooling unit. Mandatory ATP certification. Multi-temperature for combined fresh/frozen transport.

What to check when buying a used semi-trailer
Key points: chassis and longerons condition (corrosion, cracks), curtain wear and opening mechanisms, air suspension condition (bellows, valves), brakes (pads, discs, ABS/EBS), tyres (tread depth, age), electrical system (lights, connectors), and for refrigerated trailers the cooling unit condition and ATP certificate validity.
